Are Your Gut Issues Starting to Run Your Life?
I see clients whose gut health issues are quite literally starting to run their lives.
At one end of the spectrum, they wake up extra early because they need to spend ages on the loo before they can leave the house.
At the other, they need to go so frequently and urgently that they find themselves taking work calls from the bathroom.
And then there are the people who are constantly bloated, uncomfortable or worrying about what will happen after their next meal.
It affects more than digestion.
It can make travelling stressful. Meetings become difficult. Eating out becomes something you have to think about rather than enjoy. And when your digestive system isn’t working properly, it can also contribute to feeling tired, depleted and generally not at your best.
Yet so many people live with these symptoms for years and start to think they are simply “normal”.
They’re common. But that doesn’t mean you should ignore them.
So what’s actually going on?
There isn’t one answer. When I work with someone with persistent bloating, constipation, loose stools or digestive discomfort, I want to understand why it’s happening.
Some of the areas I look at include:
1. Your gut microbiome
Your gut contains trillions of microorganisms that play a role in digestion, immunity and many other aspects of health.
Sometimes the balance of these microorganisms can become disrupted. Depending on the person and their symptoms, we may need to look more closely at gut health and, where appropriate, investigate further.
2. Foods that aren’t agreeing with you
You can eat what looks like a very healthy diet and still be eating foods that don’t suit your digestive system.
For some people, identifying and temporarily removing potential trigger foods can help us understand what is contributing to their symptoms. The aim isn’t to put you on an increasingly restrictive diet forever. It’s to work out what your body tolerates, address the underlying problem where possible, and build variety back in.
3. How you’re eating
This is a big one, particularly for the busy professionals I work with.
Are you eating lunch at your desk while answering emails? Eating very quickly between meetings? Having enormous dinners late at night because you’ve barely eaten all day? Travelling constantly? Drinking more alcohol when you’re entertaining for work? Not chewing properly?
Digestion doesn’t happen independently of the rest of your life.
What you eat matters, but so does how you eat.
Sometimes relatively simple changes to meal timing, portion sizes, fibre, hydration and the way you eat can make a significant difference.
Don’t just learn to live around your gut health
If you’re planning your mornings around the bathroom, avoiding certain journeys, worrying about eating before a meeting or feeling exhausted because your digestion is constantly off, it’s worth investigating.
I work with clients to look at the whole picture: symptoms, food, lifestyle, stress, sleep and, where useful, testing. If something requires medical investigation or treatment, I also work alongside doctors and other specialists.
The goal isn’t simply to stop the bloating or get you off the loo.
It’s to understand what’s driving the problem so that your gut health stops dictating your day.
